This traditional Indian first birthday celebration brought family and friends together to celebrate a little girl turning one. From the colorful balloon decorations to the beautiful saris worn by family members and guests, the photographs tell the story of a day centered on family and celebration.

One of my favorite parts of photographing a first birthday party is seeing how a baby begins to explore everything around her. At this age, there’s so much curiosity. A colorful decoration, a balloon wall, or a familiar face can capture her attention in an instant.

One of the moments I photographed was this little girl being held by her mother as she reached toward the balloon decorations. It was a simple interaction, but it captured her curiosity and her mother’s closeness in the middle of the celebration.

These are the kinds of moments I look for throughout a first birthday party: the baby taking in her surroundings, parents holding her close, relatives gathering around, and the small interactions that might otherwise pass unnoticed.

The Details That Made the Celebration Special

The women dressed in beautiful saris brought color and elegance to the gathering. Photographing the guests, decorations, and family interactions helps tell the story of the celebration beyond the birthday portraits themselves.

When I photograph a first birthday party, I look for a combination of images: the birthday girl with her parents, candid interactions with family and guests, portraits with loved ones, and the decorations that brought the celebration together.

I also pay attention to the moments that happen naturally between the planned parts of the party. A parent holding their child, a relative leaning in for a closer look, or a little one reaching for something that catches her eye can become some of the most meaningful photographs in the gallery.
